MEDICLINIC CITY HOSPITAL

Emergency Medicine

The Emergency Department at Mediclinic City Hospital is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to treat any medical problem requiring urgent care.

With special areas within the unit dedicated to paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, fast track cases, resuscitation and general treatment, you can be assured of timely medical attention from our team of emergency physicians. We have dedicated paediatric doctors on duty in the Emergency Department for 14 hours a day from noon until 2am, with 24 hour in-house backup available if required.

The Emergency Department treats an average of 135 patients a day, with complaints ranging from discomfort from coughs and colds, trauma such as fractures and serious conditions such as chest pain and acute infections.

Our wide range of critical care services include (but are not limited to):

  • Rapid sequence intubation
  • Airway management and mechanical ventilation
  • Defibrillation
  • Advanced cardiac life support
  • Paediatric advanced life support
  • Neonatal resuscitation
  • Neonatology and paediatric services
  • Obstetrics and gynaecology emergencies
  • Haemodynamic monitoring
  • 12 lead electro-cardio graphs
  • Intravenous therapy
  • Laboratory and radiology diagnostics
  • Minor trauma
  • Minor procedures
  • Spinal immobilisation

The Emergency Department uses the Manchester Triage System in which patients are assessed according to urgency of their case.  This ranges from number one (requiring immediate care) to number five (non-urgent).  This system ensures that those in a serious condition receive priority care, however we do endeavour to ensure that all patients are seen as quickly as possible.  The average length of stay in the unit is approximately one hour, although this will vary depending on the severity of your case and the number/severity of other cases which are being dealt with at the same time.
