At Mediclinic City Hospital, the aim of the Orthopaedic Department is to be the first-choice for orthopaedic treatment, trauma management, rehabilitation and disability services.

Each year we perform significant numbers of trauma and elective orthopaedic operations including fracture management, joint replacement, ligament reconstruction, foot and ankle surgeries.  Our department provides care for patients with bone, joint, muscle and associated musculo-skeletal injuries, from diagnosis through to surgery and other treatment modalities including rehabilitation.

The orthopaedic services offered at Mediclinic City Hospital include:

  • Knee and hip joint replacement surgery, including primary and revision joint replacement, reconstruction with metal or bone graft augmentation
  • Arthroscopic surgery for knee, shoulder, ankle and hip joints
  • Sports injuries management and ligament reconstruction surgery for knee, shoulder and ankle joints including ACL reconstruction and tight-rope augmentation for knee and shoulder joint injuries
  • Foot and ankle surgery including corrective surgeries for different foot and toe deformities including Hallux Valgus surgery
  • Paediatric and adult trauma management including manipulations, open reduction and internal fixation using alternative metal work.
  • Sports injuries management
  • Cartilage repair surgery
  • Joint arthritis management including assessment and joint injections

Mediclinic City Hospital’s highly experienced orthopaedic surgeons also sub-specialise in particular areas to ensure patients have access to the best possible levels of expertise.

The department has five consultant orthopedic surgeons, three in-house and two CBS consultants. There is also a dedicated multidisciplinary team of occupational therapists, nursing staff, physiotherapists and orthotics practitioners which helps manage a wide variety of joint disorders both surgically and non-surgically.


Operating hours:

Outpatient services: Saturday – Thursday: 8am – 5pm
Trauma services: 24 hours per day through Accident & Emergency 

Our specialist team:

Dr. Michael Opitz, Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedics, MBChB, FCS (Orth) SA
Dr. Opitz graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1978.  He has extensive general trauma and elective orthopaedic experience from his positions in state and general practice in South Africa, Namibia and the UK.  He is a Fellow of the College of Surgeons (South Africa).  His special interests include lower limb arthroplasty, knee ligament and cartilage injuries and foot reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Murad Abdunabi, Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedics, MBBS, CCST (Trauma & Ortho), Facharzt (Ortho), FRCSI 
Dr. Abdunabi is a British trauma and orthopaedic surgeon.  He completed his medical studies and internship in 1990 before moving to Germany on a scholarship to undergo five years’ training in general and specialised orthopaedic surgery.  

He worked as a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon in the UK between 2001 and 2010, where he achieved further qualifications in Trauma & Orthopaedics, joint arthroplasty and paediatri corthopaedic surgery.  He is extensively experienced in emergency trauma and elective orthopaedic surgery including  a wide scope of surgical management for different paediatric and adult skeletal injuries and fractures, joint replacement surgery for hip and knee joints, ligament reconstruction, arthroscopic surgery and cartilage repair surgery, and foot and ankle surgery.

Dr. Shine Ashokan, Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedics, MB; BS, FRCSI (Gen Surgery), FRCS (Trauma & Orth)
Dr. Ashokan is a British trauma and orthopaedic surgeon with more than 10 years’ experience in Trauma and Orthopaedics in the United Kingdom.  He has specialist work experience performing independent joint replacement lists and clinics at Warwick Hospital, UK which has been voted “The Best Centre for Hip and Knee Joint Replacements within the NHS, UK” by the Dr. Foster’s Guide 2011.   He also obtained a Fellowship in Hip & Knee Arthroplasty and Soft Tissue Knee Surgery in the UK.He is a primary and revision joint replacement specialist with a very active and keen interest in Sports Medicine, but uses both operative and non-operative techniques to treat orthopaedic conditions and sports injuries. He is experienced in the pioneering ‘patient specific knee replacements’ and in arthroscopic knee cartilage restoration procedures and ligament reconstructions.  Among others, he is an international member of the European Hip Society, British Orthopaedics Association and British Trauma Society.
