MEDICLINIC CITY HOSPITAL

Vascular and Endovascular surgery at Mediclinic City Hospital

Vascular surgery is a sub-speciality of surgery and is the only speciality trained to treat diseases of the arteries, veins and lymphatics most effectively by medical therapy, minimally invasive catheter procedures and surgical reconstruction. Our goal is to optimise patients’ cardiovascular health.

We see patients with the following vascular problems:

Peripheral arterial occlusive disease – Poor leg circulation can lead to pain in the legs on walking and can often be the first indication of coronary arterial and cerebrovascular disease. Early review by the vascular surgeon can reduce the risk of limb loss, heart attack and stroke.

Diabetic foot problems- Diabetic foot infections and ulceration are the commonest reasons for diabetic patients to be admitted to hospital. Early referral to a vascular surgeon can reduce the risk of lower limb loss and extend life expectancy. Patients with diabetes should have an annual assessment of their leg circulation to reduce foot-related complications.

Aortic and peripheral aneurysm- We treat patients with aortic and peripheral aneurysms with modern day techniques.

Cerebrovascular disease and stroke prevention- We provide treatment in a multidisciplinary environment to reduce the risk of stroke by early intervention.

Varicose veins and Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)-Varicose veins can cause swelling, pain, skin changes and ulcerations in the legs. There are a variety of new minimal invasive treatments available to treat people with varicose veins. DVT can occur in the legs or the arms. It can occur after a long haul flight or an operation. Early treatment will reduce the risk of the clot travelling to the lungs or causing permanent damage to the legs or arms.

Excessive sweating – Excessive sweating affecting the hands and armpits can lead to social embarrassment and difficulty with every day tasks such as writing, holding objects and shaking hands.

Venous access surgery- This includes insertion of central ports and lines for chemotherapy and complicated venous access surgery in those requiring dialysis. Vascular surgery is the only speciality able to manage complications arising from venous access treatment.

Renal access surgery- We are able to provide multidisciplinary approach in the management of patients requiring dialysis. We aim to maintain patients requiring dialysis with minimum disruption to their quality of life.

Aggressive wound care- We treat complicated wounds in a multidisciplinary team approach that includes vascular surgeons, infectious disease specialists, vascular radiologists, physiotherapists, orthotics, vacuum therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Lymphedema and leg swellings- We assess patients with leg swelling and lymphedema in a multidisciplinary setting including our physiotherapy department.
