Mental Health Day: mental health in the workplace

 World Mental Health Day is celebrated on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness for mental health issues.


This year’s World Mental Health Day revolves around the theme of mental health in the workplace. Depression and anxiety are common disorders that have an impact on our ability to work productively and are often detrimental to our performance and quality of professional life.


Here are our tips for keeping your mental health in check at work:


1. Take time off - Resting both mentally and physically from your work load is essential to attempting to avoid stress, anxiety and other mental health related disorders


2. Whether you work at a desk, in a school, outdoors, or behind the wheel of a car, it is important to create a pleasant work environment that you enjoy going to everyday.  This could include maintaining a clean and tidy workspace, displaying photos of family and friends and keeping your work equipment organised


3. If possible, separate your personal life from your work life and vice versa. Going to work means entering a professional environment where focus and concentration is key to completing tasks and meeting goals. If this is clouded by personal problems, you may see the line between work life and personal life become blurred.


4. Set fulfilling and realistic goals at work. Achieving that promotion or meeting that deadline not only boosts your mood, but it also motivates us to work even harder.


5. Know that making mistakes is fine and try not to compare your performance to others. Everyone works and meets milestone at their own pace. Similarly, don't put too much pressure on yourself if colleagues and superiors have high expectations of you. Know your capabilities, and whilst pushing your boundaries is okay, don't forget that we learn the biggest lessons from making mistakes
