Core competencies

Children of all ages who require intensive care support for the following organ dysfunction:

  • Acute  / acute on chronic respiratory failure
  • Acute / acute on chronic cardiac failure
  • Sepsis / septic shock
  • Acute neurological dysfunction
  • Acute haematology / oncology crises
  • Acute / acute on chronic renal failure
  • Peri-operative care: general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, spinal surgery, neurosurgery, cardiac intervention
  • Stable trauma patients
  • Acute metabolic dysfunction
  • Outreach to the paediatric ward and emergency department to assist with stabilization of deteriorating children


Dr Strike (nee Rowlands) trained in the UK and graduated in 1997 from the University of London. She undertook her Paediatric Intensive Care training at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London and Birmingham Children's Hospitals. She obtained Membership of the Royal College Of Paediatrics and Child Heath in 2002 and her Certificate of Completion of Training in Paediatric Critical Care Medicine in 2007. Dr Strike subsequently worked as a consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London on the Children's Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and at Southampton Children's Hospital in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Dr Strike has extensive experience in providing intensive care support to infants and children up to the age of 18 years old with the following conditions:
acute respiratory illness, acute and chronic congenital and acquired cardiac dysfunction, pulmonary hypertension, children requiring intensive care following elective and emergency surgery (cardiothoracic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery and general surgery), extracorporeal support of cardiac and respiratory conditions including ECMO and Berlin Heart, acute neurological dysfunction, sepsis, renal failure including provision of haemofiltration, severe burns, solid organ transplantation, haematology/oncology crises, polytrauma, liver failure, metabolic disorders and complex congenital malformations. She also has extensive training and experience in the stabilisation and transport of critically ill children.
