Dr. Ala Abd Alqader Farraj is a paediatrics specialist who is certified by the Arab board of Paediatrics. She has been looking after critically ill children for the past three years including at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in the division of Paediatric Intensive Care, a very highly pressurised working environment. She has gained experience in looking after very sick children in emergency departments, following their journey through the paediatric critical care unit when they were admitted to PICU with respiratory, neurological, renal, infection related problems. This included the provision of multi-system support. She has been also involved in the care of post-renal transplant patients and oncology cases that required PICU admissions, and liaised with other professionals in the management of sub-speciality patients. She has also been involved in many resuscitation scenarios including tracheotomy tube changes, intubation, central lines and chest drains. She has also worked as PICU specialist physician at a specialised rehabilitation hospital where she gained more experience in dealing with more chronic cases especially long term mechanically ventilated patients and managing their breakthrough acute complications.
She has also attained the following skills through working in PICU: • Performance of a complete and focused history and physical examination of PICU patients. • Presenting PICU patients (verbal and written) • Acquiring a level of proficiency in performing procedures • Practicing evidence based medicine (EBM) • Displaying professional behaviour and functioning effectively as a member of the PICU team • Carrying out appropriate evaluation, treatment and follow-up while maintaining confidentiality of the patients and maintaining safe practices
