What is EVUSHELD?

EVUSHELD is the first long-acting antibody combination (tixagevimab and cilgavimab) authorised for both COVID-19 prevention and treatment in the United Arab Emirates.

EVUSHELD offers the most vulnerable patients continued, long-lasting protection through an innovative approach to both prevention and treatment for immunocompromised and high-risk patients.

What is EVUSHELD indicated and registered for in the United Arab Emirates?

EVUSHELD is an effective preventative option for pre-exposure prophylaxis and treatment of non-hospitalised patients of COVID-19 (not requiring oxygen).  It can be given to those who are currently infected with COVID-19 who are medically stable (excluding cases with known cardiac diseases or suspected unstable cardiac diseases).

Which individuals should be called for EVUSHELD administration?

Individuals eligible for EVUSHELD are those who are either or both:

• Immunocompromised or high risk as defined by national guidelines
• Exempt from Covid-19 vaccines

Can EVUSHELD be given to individuals who were vaccinated?

Yes. In individuals who have received a COVID-19 vaccine, EVUSHELD should be administered at least two weeks (≥14 days) after vaccination.

Can EVUSHELD be given to individuals who received COVID19 vaccine > (≥14 days) ago?

EVUSHELD is given as pre-exposure prophylaxis and treatment of COVID-19 to those who cannot mount an adequate response to vaccines, for example people who are immunocompromised due to a disease or treatment (e.g. people with blood cancers or other cancers, people currently or recently treated with chemotherapy, patients on dialysis, those taking powerful anti-rejection medications after an organ transplant or who are taking immunosuppressive drugs for conditions including lupus, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis).

It can also be given to those who it may not be possible to vaccinate, for example those with allergies or other intolerance of the vaccines (excluding those with pre-existing cardiac diseases). In individuals who have received a COVID-19 vaccine, EVUSHELD should be administered at least two weeks (≥14 days) after vaccination.

How is EVUSHELD administered?

EVUSHELD is delivered by convenient intramuscular (IM) injection in both prevention and treatment.

As per the guidelines, the dose needs to be repeated after six months from the initial dose.  Is the 2nd dose mandatory?

EVUSHELD administration is voluntary, however, if ongoing protection is needed, a repeat dose should be administered every six months.

Does the patient have to pay for EVUSHELD?

Patients will only pay the administration cost which is 20aed.

Do we have enough evidence on EVUSHELD about its safety?

Yes, EVUSHELD was generally well tolerated in clinical trials.
