A healthier future for the UAE

Mediclinic Middle East is committed to embedding Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into the way healthcare is delivered, managed, and continuously improved. We understand the strong connection between patient care, environmental responsibility, staff wellbeing, ethical governance and long-term operational resilience to create lasting positive value for patients, communities, and the wider healthcare system.

We're taking meaningful actions to reduce our environmental impact through lower-impact anaesthetic gases, solar and energy-efficient infrastructure, water conservation, digital care adoption, sustainable transport, diverting waste from landfill and circular-economy practices.

Our ESG approach

We believe clinical excellence and environmental responsibility can progress together, creating measurable, long-term value for patients, communities, and the wider healthcare system. Our initiatives support the transition towards lower-carbon, resource-efficient, and climate-resilient healthcare.

This commitment is reflected in our three ESG goals, which guide our approach to sustainability.

Our ESG goals

  1. Minimise the company's environmental impact
  2. Be the partner of choice that all our stakeholders trust
  3. Strengthen our corporate culture to remain an ethical and responsible corporate citizen

Our ESG commitments

We are reducing our carbon footprint through clean-energy procurement, energy efficiency, lower-carbon clinical practices and more sustainable transport.

Since 2020, Mediclinic Middle East has achieved a 54% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, equivalent to 25,662 tCO₂e avoided.

As the first healthcare provider in Abu Dhabi to adopt Clean Energy Certificates in partnership with EWEC, we have achieved 100% clean-electricity coverage across our Abu Dhabi and Al Ain facilities.

We continue to expand LED lighting and occupancy sensors across our sites to reduce unnecessary electricity consumption. We also recover fugitive gases responsibly and have phased out desflurane - a high-global-warming-potential anaesthetic gas - across all hospitals.

In addition, 60% of our operational fleet has been converted to hybrid vehicles, helping to reduce fuel consumption and transport-related carbon emissions.

Climate change can disrupt healthcare through extreme heat, flooding, storms, water scarcity, and poor air quality. We strengthen the resilience of our people, facilities, and services to help maintain safe, high-quality care during disruption.

Our approach includes climate-risk assessments, protection of critical utilities and systems, emergency preparedness training and exercises, and business continuity arrangements for essential services and supplies. Resilient design, preventive maintenance, utility redundancy, and contingency planning support readiness and recovery.

We work with health authorities, emergency services, partner hospitals, and communities to strengthen collective resilience and deliver lasting community value.

Our climate strategy addresses both sides of the challenge: reducing the emissions that contribute to climate change, while strengthening our ability to prepare for, withstand, and recover from its impacts.

We are reducing waste across our operations by preventing waste at source, increasing reuse and recycling, and diverting materials from landfill.

Food-waste composting has been implemented across Mediclinic Middle East hospitals, diverting approximately 61 tonnes of organic waste from landfill and supporting our circular-economy and waste-reduction objectives.

We have removed single-use plastic cups from our facilities, and further initiatives include compacting general waste to reduce storage and transport requirements, composting organic waste, and recycling used cooking oil.

Water is essential to safe, high-quality healthcare. We are committed to using this vital resource responsibly by monitoring consumption, improving water efficiency, and reducing avoidable waste across our facilities.

Our approach includes water-risk assessments, smart metreing, sensor taps and water-saving fixtures, as well as practical reuse initiatives such as using condensate water for irrigation where appropriate. Through continuous monitoring, preventive maintenance, and staff engagement, we aim to protect water resources while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and hygiene.

We run a comprehensive Emiratisation strategy, including a learning academy for young UAE nationals, and are working to improve female representation in senior and executive roles. This is backed by leadership development and succession planning, flexible working arrangements, and dedicated employee wellness programmes, supported by a fully implemented Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

We partner with leading academic institutions, including Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, United Arab Emirates University, University of Sharjah, Abu Dhabi University, Khalifa University, Higher Colleges of Technology (Health Sciences), and Fatima College of Health Sciences, to support the next generation of healthcare professionals. We work with government authorities on public health priorities affecting our wider community, and invest in programmes that support vulnerable and underserved groups.

We hold our suppliers to the same ethical standards we hold ourselves, with clear channels for reporting unethical conduct, strong procurement governance, and due diligence. We've embedded environmental sustainability criteria into our procurement processes to strengthen responsible sourcing, supplier engagement, and consideration of environmental impacts throughout the lifecycle. We continually improve how we manage sourcing, inventory, and logistics, and recognise supplier excellence each year.

At Mediclinic Middle East, our ESG governance structure provides clear oversight of our sustainability strategy, targets and performance. Through defined accountability, robust policies, and ethical decision-making, we integrate environmental, social, and governance priorities into our operations and support the effective delivery of our sustainability commitments.

Our Business Ethics Committee oversees standards of conduct across the organisation, supported by regular training on anti-bribery, anti-corruption, and ethical behaviour. Anyone with a concern, employee or stakeholder, can raise it through a confidential ethics reporting line.

All our employees complete mandatory data privacy training covering confidentiality, information security, and responsible handling of personal data. We invest in protecting personal information in line with the UAE's Federal Data Protection Law and relevant GDPR principles, with ongoing governance controls to support transparency and accountability.

A legacy for new life

Every new baby is another reason to invest in a healthier future. Through Baby Born to Bloom, our partnership with The Storey Group, we're planting 300 mangrove trees to mark babies born at Mediclinic during the campaign, supporting the UAE's Year of Family and the health of the world they'll grow up in.
