Summer Campaign - Nephrologist Tips

Water is the secret of life, and the kidneyy’ work depends on fluids.  The adult human body contains approximately 42 litres of water (for a person who weighs 70 kg).

The kidneys filter 180 litres per day, then the resulting toxins are concentrated to come out at a rate of one litre of urine per day.

The high temperature in the summer season increases the rate of fluid loss from the body in the form of sweat and evaporation, which leads to a decrease in the water content of the body.

Continuing exposure to dehydration threatens the kidneys with acute insufficiency and a deficiency of sodium and potassium salts if the lost fluids are not compensated.

Symptoms of dehydration appear in the form of dry skin, pressure drop, decreased urine output and extreme thirst.

It is recommended that a normal person drink about two to three litres per day during the summer period, while avoiding exposure to high temperatures.

Patients with kidney stones and chronic urinary infections need to drink more water than normal.

Patients with heart failure, kidney failure and liver cirrhosis are advised to drink less water and stay away from heat sources.

Monitor the amount of urine within 24 hours, and if it is noticeably low (less than 400 ml per day), see a doctor immediately.
