Understanding your BMI result
Your BMI falls into one of the following ranges. Each range gives an indication of whether your weight may affect your health. If you’re concerned about your BMI or what it means for you, our doctors can support you with personalised advice.
Below 18.5: underweight
Your BMI is below the healthy weight range. Being underweight may be associated with nutritional deficiencies or other health concerns.
18.5-24.9: healthy weight
Your BMI is within the healthy weight range. Maintaining a healthy weight and waist circumference can help reduce your risk of health problems.
25-29.9: overweight
Your BMI is above the healthy weight range. Losing excess weight through appropriate diet and lifestyle changes may help improve your overall health.
30-34.9: obesity class 1
Your BMI is within the obesity class 1 range. Weight loss can help improve your health and may involve lifestyle changes, medication, or other weight-management treatments.
35-39.9: obesity class 2
Your BMI is within the obesity class 2 range. This can increase your risk of conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnoea. Specialist weight-management care may be recommended.
40 or above: obesity class 3
Your BMI is within the obesity class 3 range and is associated with a higher risk of serious health problems. Treatment may include lifestyle changes, medication, or bariatric surgery where clinically appropriate.
