After your visit

Knowing what to expect after your appointment or hospital stay can make things easier, so here’s practical guidance for what comes next, from managing your medication to arranging follow-up care.

Before you leave

When you're discharged, your doctor will confirm you're fit to leave and talk you through any ongoing care you need. You'll receive your discharge summary, medication instructions, and details of any follow-up appointments, along with any other documents relevant to your care. You'll also settle any outstanding charges before you leave.

If you've come in for an appointment instead, your doctor will talk you through your diagnosis and treatment plan, and let you know about any tests or follow-up appointments you need. Where required, you'll be given any prescriptions, referrals, or medical certificates you need before you go.

Caring for yourself at home

Your doctor will explain any new medication before you leave, including what it's for, how and when to take it, how long to continue, and any precautions or side effects to be aware of. Ask your care team if anything's unclear.

If you've had an outpatient appointment, take your prescription to the on-site Mediclinic Middle East pharmacy, where our pharmacists will prepare your medication and can answer any questions. If you've been discharged after a stay, your nurse will usually give you your medication and discharge instructions before you leave. For repeat prescriptions, you can arrange these with your doctor at your next follow-up appointment.

Your aftercare instructions depend on your procedure, and your doctor or nursing team will explain what you need to do before you leave. You may also be given written information to take home.

If something doesn't feel right, follow the discharge instructions you were given carefully, and seek immediate medical attention if you experience unexpected or worsening symptoms.

Follow up appointments

If you need a follow-up appointment, your doctor will recommend when to come back. Depending on your treatment, this may be arranged before you leave, or our team will contact you afterwards. You can also book or change an appointment anytime through the Mediclinic App or our Customer Engagement Centre.

If appropriate, your doctor may offer you a free Follow-Up Chat through the Mediclinic App, letting you message them with questions about that visit for up to seven days afterwards. It's offered by your doctor, can be used once, and works in the same way as a telemedicine chat consultation. It's currently available with selected doctors and clinics.

For any other non-urgent questions, contact your treating physician or your Mediclinic Middle East facility.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on your treatment. Your doctor will tell you if a follow-up is needed and roughly when to expect it, and in many cases the appointment is already booked before you leave the facility. If it isn't, someone from our team will be in touch afterwards to arrange a time that works for you. You're also welcome to book, move, or check on a follow-up whenever suits you, either through the Mediclinic App or by giving our Customer Engagement Centre a call.

If you saw us for an outpatient appointment, take your prescription to the Mediclinic Middle East pharmacy on site, where our pharmacy team will get it ready and can talk you through anything you're unsure about. If you were admitted and are now being discharged, your medication is usually handed to you directly by your nurse, along with your discharge paperwork, so there's nothing extra for you to arrange before you head home.

Everything's available in one place through the Mediclinic App. Once your results are ready, you'll be able to view them there, and if you need a copy of your wider medical records, you can request these through the app too. It's also where you can manage the rest of your care, from booking appointments to speaking with your doctor, so it's worth having on hand after your visit.

For anything that isn't urgent, your treating physician or the Mediclinic Middle East facility you visited are the best place to start. If your question is about an appointment specifically, you can also reach us through the Mediclinic App or our Customer Engagement Centre, and someone will point you in the right direction.
