Enhanced orthopaedic recovery programme
An evidence-based pathway designed to help you recover faster after hip or knee joint replacement and return to everyday activity as soon as possible.

Faster recovery after hip or knee replacement
The Enhanced orthopaedic recovery programme, also known as a rapid recovery joint replacement programme, is an evidence-based pathway for people having hip or knee replacement surgery.
Joint replacement involves replacing a diseased joint with a prosthesis. When hip or knee pain is affecting your quality of life and other treatment has not provided enough relief, joint replacement may be recommended. The aim of the enhanced recovery pathway is to help you return to your normal daily activities and function as quickly as possible.
Care before, during, and after surgery
Mediclinic City Hospital uses a standard pathway to optimise your overall health before surgery and support you through the procedure and recovery. Assessment and education before surgery, less invasive surgical techniques, post-operative care, and rehabilitation all form part of the approach.
Your three-stage recovery pathway
1. Before surgery: your pre-operative assessment includes education and counselling, with guidance on diet, medication, and what to expect from your recovery.
2. Joint replacement surgery: surgeons use less invasive techniques for hip or knee replacement. Robotic surgery is used at Mediclinic City Hospital to support minimal blood loss, less trauma, and quicker rehabilitation.
3. Early recovery and rehabilitation: after surgery, there are no tubes or drains. You are encouraged to move, eat, drink, wash, dress, and socialise as soon as possible. This helps reduce the risk of muscle loss and blood clots and supports mobility. The orthopaedic and rehabilitation teams also prepare you for post-discharge care, exercise, and follow-up so you can continue progressing independently.
