Healthy gums and bone keep your teeth anchored, and our dental teams treat the gum problems that put them at risk. Across the UAE, we assess, treat and monitor gum disease at every stage, and we care for the gums and bone around dental implants.

What is periodontics?

Periodontics is the care of your gums, as well as the bone and other structures that support and surround your teeth. A periodontist prevents, diagnoses and treats gum disease and problems such as receding gums and gum disease around dental implants. They also place implants where teeth have been lost.

Because gum disease can be a long-term condition, ongoing monitoring and professional cleaning are essential to help keep it stable.

When should you see a periodontist?

Book an appointment if you notice:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Red, swollen or sore gums
  • Gums that are shrinking back from your teeth
  • Loose teeth, or teeth that have started to move
  • Bad breath or a bad taste that won't go away
  • A change in how your teeth fit together when you bite
  • Concerns about the appearance of your gums or overall smile

A gum abscess with facial swelling that spreads and makes it hard to breathe, speak or swallow is a dental emergency: seek emergency care immediately.

Gum problems are often picked up at a routine check-up before you feel them. It's worth seeing a periodontist if you smoke or live with diabetes, as both raise your risk of gum disease.

What to expect

At your first visit, the periodontist asks about your health and dental history, then examines your gums and teeth. They gently measure the small gaps between your gums and teeth to check for pockets that signal gum disease, and they may take X-rays to see how much bone supports your teeth. This assessment shows how far any gum disease has progressed and guides what comes next.

Treatment may start with a deep clean below the gumline to remove plaque and tartar, if needed where deep pockets and bone loss are present. If gum disease is more advanced, care can include gum surgery, grafts to rebuild lost gum or bone, or treatment for the gums around an implant. Gum disease can return, so regular maintenance visits help keep it under control. Your periodontist will talk you through the treatment options and explain what happens next.

Periodontics at Mediclinic

Our dental teams provide gum care across our hospitals and clinics, including the prevention and treatment of gum disease. Depending on your needs, treatment may include deep cleaning through scaling and root planing to remove plaque and tartar below the gumline, as well as advice on brushing, flossing and diet to protect your gums.

For missing teeth, we offer dental implants and implant-supported replacements, and if a tooth cannot be saved, we can remove it and talk you through the options. Regular hygiene visits and gum checks are part of our routine dental care, so problems can be spotted early, and our dental teams work together when a gum problem needs more specialist attention.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often.

A periodontist treats gum disease and conditions affecting the gums, bones and other structures that support and surround the teeth. This includes receding gum, loose teeth, and bone loss. They also treat the gums around dental implants and may place implants when teeth are lost.

The periodontist reviews your health and dental history, examines your gums and checks for pockets, bleeding and other signs of gum disease. X-rays may be taken to assess the bone supporting your teeth. In some cases, 3D scans and clinical photographs may also be needed.

Assessment may include measuring the pockets around your teeth, checking for bleeding and taking X-rays to assess bone support. Depending on your condition, a 3D scan or clinical photographs may also be recommended.

A general dentist looks after your overall dental health, including check-ups, fillings and cleaning. A periodontist has extra training in the gums and the bone that support the teeth, and usually handles more advanced gum disease and complex implant care.
