Our prosthodontists rebuild damaged and missing teeth so you can eat, speak and smile again. Across our UAE dental clinics, this restorative work ranges from crowns, dentures, veneers, and aesthetic dentistry to implant-supported teeth, with the plan shaped around your mouth and how you want it to look and work.

What is prosthodontics?

Prosthodontics is the branch of dentistry that restores and replaces damaged or missing teeth in adults, bringing back how the mouth works and looks. Prosthodontists are dentists with further training who take on complex cases, such as several missing teeth or heavy tooth wear, that a general dentist may refer on. They plan the treatment, fit the restoration and help you maintain it over the years. Dental implants may be placed by an oral surgeon, periodontist or a prosthodontist with advanced training, depending on the individual case.

When should you see a prosthodontist?

Book an appointment if you notice:

  • A missing tooth or a gap in your teeth
  • A broken, chipped or badly worn tooth
  • A denture that feels loose or no longer fits
  • Difficulty chewing or eating comfortably
  • An old crown, bridge or filling that has come loose
  • Feeling self-conscious about the look of your teeth

You might come to a prosthodontist on your own, but more often a general dentist will refer you when treatment needs specialist planning. It's also worth a visit if long-standing tooth loss or wear is changing how you eat, speak or look, even when nothing hurts. Getting advice early can keep the options simpler.

What to expect

At your first visit, the prosthodontist checks your teeth, gums and bite, and asks how the problem affects your eating, speech and how you feel about your smile. You may have X-rays and, where needed, a digital scan or traditional impressions to create a model of your teeth. Photographs may also be taken. The prosthodontist will then explain what can be restored, the available options, and how long treatment may take.

Treatment might involve a single crown, multiple crowns, bridges, implant-supported prostheses, dentures, or a combination of these, and may require several appointments. Where teeth are missing, implants can anchor a crown, bridge, or denture, so it stays firmly in place. Dentures and other restorations need occasional adjusting, relining or repair, and your prosthodontist explains the upkeep each option needs before agreeing the next step with you.

Prosthodontics at Mediclinic

Our prosthodontists provide care at selected Mediclinic dental clinics. They restore damaged teeth with crowns and replace missing teeth with bridges, dentures, or implant-supported restorations. Veneers may also be used to improve the appearance of worn or discoloured teeth.

Treatment is planned around your individual dental needs and may involve other members of the dental team for care such as gum treatment, root canal treatment, restorations, braces or clear aligners.

Our teams can also help maintain and repair restorations and adjust or reline dentures when needed. Some prosthodontists with advanced training can also place dental implants, while in other cases this may be carried out by another dental specialist.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often.

A prosthodontist restores and replaces damaged or missing teeth. Common treatments include crowns, bridges, dentures, veneers, post and core build-ups, inlays, onlays, and implant-supported crowns or prostheses. They also manage severely worn teeth and complex cases requiring full-mouth rehabilitation.

A general dentist provides a wide range of dental care, including preventive care, fillings, inlays, onlays, veneers, root canal treatment and simple tooth extractions. A prosthodontist has additional training in restoring and replacing teeth and often manages more complex cases, such as multiple missing teeth, severely worn teeth or full-mouth rehabilitation.

Your first visit mainly involves an assessment. The prosthodontist examines your mouth, reviews your dental history, and may take X-rays, photographs, a digital scan or traditional impressions. They will then discuss the findings and recommend a treatment plan.

The tests you need will depend on your condition. Dental X-rays may be used to check the teeth, roots, jawbone, and bite (occlusion). A digital scan or traditional impression may also be taken to create a model of your teeth. For aesthetic treatments, a model or wax-up may be created to show how your teeth could look before treatment is finalised. In some cases, digital design may also be used.
