At our dental clinics across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, our dentists can improve the appearance of your teeth and smile with treatments such as whitening, veneers, tooth-coloured fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, braces and clear aligners. In some cases, gum treatments may also be recommended for concerns such as a gummy smile, gum recession or pigmentation. Your dentist will talk you through the suitable options and what each treatment can realistically achieve.

What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry, also called aesthetic dentistry, is dental care that improves how your teeth look, changing their colour, shape or position, or replacing a missing tooth. It works on a healthy mouth, so any decay or gum disease is treated first. Treatments range from simple whitening to more involved work such as veneers or crowns, and your dentist explains the likely results, the number of visits and the cost before you decide.

When might you consider cosmetic dentistry?

People come to cosmetic dentistry with all sorts of concerns about how their teeth look. You might think about it if you have:

  • Teeth that have become stained or darker
  • A chipped or worn tooth
  • Gaps, or crooked or crowded teeth
  • A missing tooth you'd like replaced
  • Old fillings that have darkened, or a tooth that changed colour after root canal treatment
  • Concerns about the overall appearance of your smile

There's no medical need for cosmetic treatment, and healthy teeth of any shape or shade are perfectly normal. If you do want to change something, your dentist checks your mouth is healthy first and treats any decay or gum disease, because cosmetic work lasts best on a sound foundation. In the UAE you can usually book a dentist directly, though some insurance plans don't cover cosmetic care, so it's worth checking your coverage.

What to expect

At your first visit, the dentist will examine your whole mouth, not just the teeth you want to change. If needed, they may also take impressions or a digital scan to carry out a smile analysis. You talk through what you'd like to be different, what's realistic, and the choices available, with the pros and cons of each. You can bring a photo of how your teeth used to look if that helps. Simple treatments such as whitening or bonding can sometimes be done on the same day.

More involved work, such as veneers, crowns or a bridge, usually takes more than one visit, often with an impression or digital scan sent to a laboratory. Whitening isn't permanent, and veneers, crowns and fillings can chip or wear, so your dentist explains how to look after the result and when it may need refreshing. Some cosmetic work is hard to reverse, so it's worth taking your time.

Cosmetic dentistry at Mediclinic

Our dentists and dental specialists work as a team to provide cosmetic treatments alongside everyday dental care, helping to maintain the health of your teeth while also improving their appearance. We provide treatments such as teeth whitening, veneers and tooth-coloured fillings, and we can straighten teeth or replace a missing one where that would help. Our teams also carry out restorative work, including dental implants, to rebuild damaged teeth.

Because cosmetic treatment is a personal choice, our dentists focus on what matters to you and set out what each option can and cannot achieve. Our clinics use digital imaging, including digital scans, to plan treatment and show you the likely result before you start.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often.

Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the appearance of your teeth and smile. It can brighten stained teeth, repair chipped teeth, close small gaps, or straighten crooked teeth. These treatments are provided alongside your general dental care once your mouth is healthy.

The dentist will check that your whole mouth is healthy, treat any decay or gum disease first, and may take X-rays. If needed, they may also take impressions or a digital scan for a smile analysis. You'll then discuss what you'd like to change, what's realistic and the available options, so you can plan your treatment together.

It depends on the treatment. A general dentist carries out much cosmetic work and can refer you to a specialist, such as a prosthodontist for crowns and veneers, an orthodontist for alignment or a periodontist for the gums.

Cosmetic dentistry improves the look of your teeth in several ways, including their colour and shape. Orthodontics is one part of that picture, focused on straightening teeth and correcting the bite with braces or aligners.
