María J. Chaves-Samaniego, MD, PhD, is a Consultant Ophthalmologist specializing in glaucoma and cataract surgery. Her areas of expertise include complex glaucoma surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and cataract surgery with premium lens implantation.

She trained at prestigious institutions in Spain and the United States. During her surgical career, she has performed numerous intraocular procedures, including deep sclerectomy, trabeculectomy, MIGS, and glaucoma drainage device implantation, becoming the first ophthalmologist in Spain to perform eyeWatch glaucoma surgery.

Before joining Mediclinic Parkview Hospital in 2023, she chaired the Glaucoma Unit at Vissum Miranza in Alicante and practiced as a glaucoma and cataract Consultant at Vissum Madrid and Miranza Palomares in Benidorm.

The University of Granada, Spain, granted her the Medical Degree (MD) in 2011 and a Master of Science (MS) in Tissue Engineering in 2013. After completing her residency training in Ophthalmology at San Cecilio University Hospital in Granada, Spain, and a Glaucoma Fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Florida, United States, in 2018, she obtained her PhD in Ophthalmology from the University of Granada in 2021.

Throughout her career, she has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and presentations at national and international meetings. Regarding her clinical research career, she is currently involved in glaucoma clinical trials and has led several clinical trials and studies as principal investigator in glaucoma, cataract surgery, and retina.

She is an Adjunct Faculty Member at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), where she contributes to the education and training of ophthalmology residents and medical students. Previously, she was involved in teaching and training activities for residents and students at San Cecilio University Hospital in Granada and Miguel Hernández University in Alicante, as well as mentoring glaucoma fellows at Vissum Miranza in Alicante.
