Inpatient rehabilitation
Hospital-based rehabilitation at Mediclinic Middle East after injury or amputation, with support for mobility, independence, and orthotic or prosthetic needs.

Rehabilitation built around everyday life
At Mediclinic Middle East, inpatient rehabilitation is designed around your medical condition, physical endurance, lifestyle, and social and vocational needs.
The rehabilitation team works closely with Mediclinic Orthotic Prosthetic Services. Care can continue across a wider pathway that includes inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient orthotic and prosthetic care, follow-up support, and community re-entry.
The aim is to help you become more independent and develop the skills you need to manage daily life following an injury or limb loss.
Our rehabilitation pathway can include
- An initial inpatient stay after amputation or injury
- An inpatient stay for orthotic or prosthetic fitting and training
- Outpatient orthotic and prosthetic fitting
- Follow-up outpatient care
- Support groups
- Community re-entry support
Admission to inpatient rehabilitation
Admission to the Mediclinic Middle East inpatient rehabilitation programme can take place directly from an acute care hospital.
A clinical liaison and doctor will first assess whether an inpatient rehabilitation stay is appropriate. The length of the initial stay varies according to your condition and rehabilitation needs.
What happens during your stay
Your care is led by your treating specialist and can bring together physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing, orthotics, and prosthetics. Diabetes education is also provided where relevant.
Rehabilitation focuses on the practical activities that help you live more independently. Depending on your needs, you may work on:
- Walking and stair climbing
- Transfers and bed mobility
- Wheelchair use
- Using the bathroom and shower
- Skin care and maintaining skin health
- Family training
- Maintaining your health and function
Where an orthotic or prosthetic device is needed, early fitting is encouraged when appropriate. Mediclinic Prosthetic Services selects components around your individual needs, with the aim of reducing rehabilitation time and maximising function.
Goals of your initial rehabilitation stay
- Performing everyday activities with supervision or modified independence
- Improving transfers, mobility, and energy conservation
- Establishing the most appropriate level of mobility for discharge, whether using a wheelchair or walking
- Identifying whether a temporary orthotic or prosthetic device is needed
- Maintaining movement at the hip or knee following amputation
- Preventing hip or knee contractures
- Learning safe positioning in a wheelchair
- Becoming independent with your home exercise programme
- Becoming independent with skin management and desensitisation techniques
- Training your family to support therapy at home

Managing swelling during rehabilitation
Oedema management may form part of your rehabilitation. The Physiotherapy Department works with the Prosthetic Service to provide manual lymphatic drainage where needed, helping to improve lymphatic drainage and reduce swelling.
