Physiotherapy and rehabilitation

Our physiotherapists and rehabilitation teams help you move better, manage pain, and recover after injury, surgery, mechanical issues or a long-term condition. Across our hospitals and clinics, we treat problems such as back pain, sports injuries and difficulty moving after a stroke, and we plan each stage of your recovery alongside you.
What is physiotherapy and rehabilitation?
Physiotherapy helps restore movement and function when injury, illness or disability affects how your body works. Physiotherapists are allied-health professionals, not doctors; they assess how you move, then treat you with targeted exercise, hand on manual therapy, education and advice. Rehabilitation is broader, and a doctor-led team may guide your recovery after a serious illness. Occupational therapy is a related service that focuses on everyday tasks rather than movement itself.
When should you see a physiotherapist?
Book an appointment if you notice:
- Musculoskeletal: pain, arthritis, stiffness, injuries or fractures, surgery
- Neurological: stroke, parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, other acute or chronic neurological conditions, dizziness, problems with balance or walking
- Hand therapy: surgeries, fractures, pain
- Paediatric conditions: developmental delays, torticollis, cerebral palsy, scoliosis, surgery, sports injuries, congenital and other neurological issues
- Pelvic health: urine leakage, sexual concerns, prolapses, pre or post delivery
- Cardiopulmonary issues: shortness of breath, after heart surgery
Back pain with numbness around your genitals or anus, or new problems controlling your bladder or bowels, needs emergency care: go to your nearest emergency department.
Physiotherapy also helps after an operation, through pregnancy and recovery, and to lower the risk of falls in later life. A physiotherapist assesses your history and how you move, then agrees a treatment plan with you. Your doctor may also refer you as part of your care.
What to expect
At your first visit, the physiotherapist asks about your symptoms, your general health and what you're finding difficult to do. They then examine the affected area, checking your movement, strength, posture and balance. For some problems, they may also watch how you walk or run. From this assessment, they explain what may be causing or contributing to your symptoms and agree a treatment plan with you.
Most treatments centre on exercise that rebuilds your movement and strength, with hands-on manual therapy where it helps. Your physiotherapist also gives advice for managing symptoms at home. Some people have electrotherapy, dry needling, taping or shockwave therapy alongside their exercises. You'll usually have a course of appointments, with progress reviewed and the plan adjusted as you recover.
