Breast cancer screening

Early detection turns uncertainty into answers. Get screened for breast cancer: prioritise your health and silence the "what if?".

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. In the UAE, it is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women.

While many cases occur without symptoms in the early stages, some types can spread quickly if not detected and treated in time. Most cases develop slowly over several years, which is why regular screening is crucial.

What are the symptoms of breast cancer?

Although screening can detect cancer before symptoms arise, be alert to the following signs:

  • A lump or thickening in the breast or underarm
  • Change in the size, shape, or appearance of the breast
  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin on the breast
  • Inverted nipple or changes in nipple appearance
  • Nipple discharge (especially blood-stained)
  • Redness, scaling, or thickening of the breast or nipple skin

If you notice any of these symptoms, please consult your doctor promptly.

Why is screening important?

Early detection through regular screening improves the likelihood of successful treatment and recovery. A screening mammogram can find changes in the breast tissue before they become noticeable or cause symptoms, potentially identifying cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage.

Who should consider screening

All women aged 40 years and above with average risk should undergo breast cancer screening. Women at higher risk – such as those with a personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer, those who have had chest radiation before the age of 30, or those with known genetic mutations (e.g. BRCA1 or BRCA2) – may need a different screening schedule. Consult your physician about the right screening schedule: call us on 800 2033.

  • You are a woman aged 40 or older
  • You are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You are not being treated for an existing breast condition

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that creates detailed images of the breast. It is used to detect lumps, masses, or abnormal tissue before these changes can be felt or cause symptoms. It is safe, quick, and one of the most effective methods of early detection.

Preparing for your mammogram

  • Schedule the scan during the week after your menstrual period, when breasts are less tender
  • Bring previous mammogram images (on CD or print) if available
  • Avoid using deodorants, powders, lotions or creams on your chest and underarms on the day of the test

During your mammogram

  • You will undress from the waist up and wear a provided gown
  • A female radiographer will explain the procedure and help you get into position
  • Your breast will be gently compressed between two plates to obtain clear images
  • You may feel slight pressure or discomfort for a few seconds
  • The entire procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes

Understanding your results

Normal: No further action required. Your physician will advise when you should return for your next screening.

Abnormal: You may be called back for further testing. This does not necessarily mean you have cancer, but additional investigations may include:

  • Additional mammographic views
  • Breast and axillary ultrasound
  • Referral to a Breast Surgeon for clinical examination
  • Fine needle aspiration (FNA)
  • Image-guided biopsy

Screening package rates

Screening is covered by selected insurance plans. Self-pay options are also available.

Mammogram - AED 375

Mammogram & breast ultrasound – AED 725

The rates include physician consultation.
