IVF and ICSI
IVF involves collecting eggs after the ovaries have been stimulated with medication, then fertilising the eggs in a laboratory. ICSI can be used with IVF when a single sperm needs to be injected directly into each egg, including in selected cases where sperm factors are affecting fertilisation. It may also be considered for some couples with unexplained difficulty conceiving.
The exact treatment plan varies from person to person.
What IVF or ICSI treatment can involve
Ovarian stimulation
Triggering egg maturation
Egg and sperm collection
Fertilisation
Embryo transfer
Pregnancy test
Intrauterine insemination
IUI places washed, concentrated sperm into the uterus using a fine catheter close to ovulation. It may be considered for unexplained infertility or selected mild factors that are making natural conception more difficult, and medication may be used to stimulate the ovaries.
In suitable cases, four to six cycles are recommended. Success can reach up to 20% per cycle, although this varies with factors including age, the reason for fertility difficulty, and the medication used. IUI is less invasive and more affordable than IVF, takes a short time, does not usually interrupt daily routine, is described as virtually painless, and does not require anaesthesia. It generally has a lower success rate than IVF.
What IUI can involve
Early-cycle checks
Preparing for ovulation
Trigger injection
Preparing the sample
Insemination
