Diabetes Education

Living well with diabetes takes daily decisions, and our diabetes educators help you make them. Across our UAE hospitals and clinics, diabetes specialist nurses and dietitians work alongside your medical team, teaching the practical skills of self-care. Over time, the day-to-day work of managing your diabetes becomes more familiar and less daunting.
What is diabetes education?
Diabetes education is practical support that helps you look after your own diabetes between clinic visits. Diabetes educators, usually specialist nurses or dietitians, teach the skills daily life with diabetes calls for, such as monitoring blood sugar and using insulin. It's for anyone newly diagnosed or wanting steadier control, and it continues as your needs change. Your doctor directs your medical treatment and a dietitian may plan your nutrition; the educator helps you put it all into practice.
Who is diabetes education for?
Your diabetes team may suggest seeing a diabetes educator if you are:
- Newly diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes
- Finding your blood sugar hard to keep in range
- Starting insulin or a new diabetes medicine
- Pregnant and living with diabetes, or diagnosed with gestational diabetes
- Learning to use a glucose sensor or insulin pump
- Caring for a child or family member with diabetes
Many people see an educator soon after diagnosis and again whenever their treatment or routine changes. Diabetes education is usually arranged through your diabetes team or family doctor, often as part of the care that follows your diagnosis. Family members are often welcome too, especially when a child is the one living with diabetes.
What to expect
Your first session is a conversation, not a test. The educator asks about your diabetes, your daily routine and what you find hardest, then agrees with you what to work on first. You might go through how to check your blood sugar, read the numbers and record them, or practise an injection. You'll have time to ask the questions that matter to you.
After that, support is shaped around you. Some people come back for a few short sessions, others join a group programme that covers topics like carbohydrate counting and staying well on sick days. Your educator keeps in step with the rest of your team, so the advice you get fits your medical care. Together you set goals you can actually keep, and adjust them as life changes.
Diabetes Education at Mediclinic
Our diabetes educators work within our endocrinology and diabetes services, alongside the doctors and dietitians who look after your medical care. In Dubai, Mediclinic Dubai Mall runs a diabetic wellness programme. It supports people with prediabetes, established diabetes and diabetes in pregnancy. In Abu Dhabi, diabetes educators at Mediclinic Airport Road Hospital help you build the skills of self-care, from monitoring your blood sugar to managing it day to day. Depending on your needs, a session might cover something practical, such as reading your glucose numbers, handling low blood sugar or planning meals you enjoy. Where foot care or nutrition needs closer attention, a podiatrist or dietitian can join in too.
