Minimally invasive gynaecological surgery treats many gynaecological conditions through small cuts or the body's natural opening, rather than one large incision. We offer this keyhole approach across our hospitals in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, helping many women recover faster and spend less time in hospital. In many cases, the surgeon can diagnose and treat the problem in one operation.

What is minimally invasive gynaecological surgery?

Minimally invasive gynaecological surgery is a way of operating on the female reproductive organs without a large cut. In laparoscopy, or keyhole surgery, the surgeon works through a few small cuts in the tummy using a camera and slim instruments. In hysteroscopy, a thin camera passes through the vagina and cervix to reach the womb, with no cut at all. Surgeons use these approaches to look inside, reach a diagnosis and treat conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and Pelvic organ prolapse.

Who has minimally invasive gynaecological surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery is usually planned after you've been diagnosed with a gynaecological condition. Your gynaecologist may suggest a keyhole or hysteroscopic operation if you have:

  • Fibroids that cause heavy bleeding or pressure
  • Endometriosis or ongoing pelvic pain
  • An ovarian cyst that needs removing
  • Heavy or abnormal bleeding that has not settled with other treatment
  • Polyps or a suspected problem inside the womb

Your gynaecologist decides whether a keyhole or hysteroscopic approach suits you. It depends on the condition, your medical history and the size or position of what's being treated. Keyhole surgery isn't right for everyone: some cases are safer with open surgery, and your surgeon will explain why if that applies to you. Most people reach this service through a referral from their gynaecologist or family doctor.

What to expect

Before surgery, you'll meet your gynaecologist to go through your history, an examination and any scans you've already had. You might have an ultrasound to map the problem and blood tests. You may be asked not to eat or drink before a general anaesthetic. Your surgeon explains which approach they plan to use, what it involves and the small risks that come with any surgery, and you'll have time to ask questions.

Most of these operations happen under general anaesthetic, though you're awake with local anaesthetic for some hysteroscopies. During laparoscopy, the surgeon inflates the tummy with gas to see clearly. Hysteroscopy works through the cervix, so there's little or no outside wound. Recovery varies, but many women go home the same day or next, sooner than after open surgery. Your surgeon explains the options and agrees the next step with you.

Minimally Invasive Gynaecological Surgery at Mediclinic

We provide minimally invasive gynaecology across our hospitals in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Our gynaecologists use laparoscopy to treat conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts and Pelvic organ prolapse surgeries through a few small cuts. They also perform hysteroscopy, working through the cervix to reach the womb without a cut on the outside. We carry out many of these operations as day cases, with no overnight stay. We run a dedicated minimally invasive gynaecology service, and one of our Dubai hospitals holds an international accreditation in this field, awarded by a surgical review body.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often.

It's surgery on the female reproductive organs done through small cuts or the natural opening, using a camera and slim instruments. Surgeons use it for conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis and ovarian cysts.

Your gynaecologist reviews your history, examines you and checks any scans, then explains the plan. Most operations are done under general anaesthetic through a few small cuts, or through the cervix for a hysteroscopy, so there is little or no outside wound.

Recovery varies with the operation and the person. Many women go home the same day or the next and get back to normal activities sooner than after open surgery. Your surgeon gives you clear advice for your own recovery.

Minimally invasive surgery uses small cuts or the natural opening; open surgery uses a larger cut and suits larger or more complex cases. Robotic surgery is a form of keyhole surgery where the surgeon guides instruments from a console.
