Obstetrics and Gynaecology

We care for women and their babies through pregnancy, birth and the years that follow. Whether you're planning a family, expecting a baby or managing menopause, our specialists can help you through it. They work in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.
What is obstetrics and gynaecology?
Obstetrics and gynaecology focuses on women's reproductive health. Obstetrics is the care of pregnancy, birth and the weeks after, while gynaecology covers the female reproductive system at every other stage, beginning with the first period and continuing past menopause. Specialists here diagnose and treat conditions such as heavy periods, fibroids and endometriosis, carry out surgery when it's needed, and guide the ongoing care that keeps you well through each phase of life.
Areas within obstetrics and gynaecology
- Aesthetic gynaecology: Cosmetic and functional procedures for the vulva and vagina, chosen for comfort, appearance or wellbeing, with the decision always resting with you.
- Breast imaging: Breast imaging looks for and diagnoses breast problems, using scans such as mammography and ultrasound.
- Fertility: Support for people who are struggling to conceive, looking into why pregnancy isn't happening and offering treatments such as ovulation medicines and IVF.
- Fetal medicine: Fetal medicine cares for the unborn baby, tracking development and managing any problems found during pregnancy.
- Minimally invasive gynaecological surgery: Fibroids and endometriosis can be treated through keyhole surgery (laparoscopy) or a camera examination of the womb, which means smaller cuts and a shorter recovery.
- Urogynaecology: Deals with pelvic floor problems, including prolapse and the bladder and continence issues that affect daily life.
When should you see an obstetrician or gynaecologist?
Book an appointment if you notice:
- Heavy, painful or irregular periods
- Pelvic pain or pain during sex
- Bleeding between periods or after sex
- Menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes or night sweats
- Trouble getting pregnant after trying for a while
- A positive pregnancy test, or a pregnancy that needs closer care
Sudden, severe tummy or pelvic pain with a positive pregnancy test can signal an ectopic pregnancy: seek emergency care.
You don't need symptoms to book. Regular cervical screening, also called a smear test, checks the health of the cervix and helps prevent cervical cancer. Many people also book a visit when they're hoping to conceive. Menopause care can ease symptoms and protect your health for the years ahead. In the UAE you can usually see a gynaecologist directly, though some insurers ask for a referral first.
What to expect
Your first appointment starts with a conversation about your health, your periods or your pregnancy, and what's brought you in. The doctor may examine you and arrange a few tests. An ultrasound scan, which uses sound waves to look at the womb and ovaries, is common. You might also have a cervical screening test or blood tests.
What happens next depends on what the doctor finds. Some concerns settle with lifestyle changes or medicines. Others need a procedure such as keyhole surgery, or an operation where that's the safer choice. Pregnancy care follows its own path, with regular antenatal checks and scans as your baby grows. Whatever the situation, your doctor talks you through the options and agrees the next step with you.
