Urology

Our urology teams care for urinary and men's health problems, from kidney stones and an enlarged prostate to urological cancers. We offer advanced diagnosis and treatment, including shockwave therapy for kidney stones, minimally invasive options for prostate conditions and robot-assisted surgery for cancer and other complex urological conditions available in Dubai.
What is urology?
Urology is the care of the urinary tract in men and women and also covers the male reproductive system. Urologists diagnose and treat conditions such as urinary infections, kidney stones, an enlarged prostate, urinary incontinence and a wide range of urological cancers. Urologists provide both medical and surgical treatments, focusing on functional and structural problems of the kidneys, urinary tract and male reproductive system. Urology is different from nephrology, which focuses on the medical care of the kidneys, including chronic kidney disease and dialysis.
When should you see a urologist?
Book an appointment if you notice:
- Pain or burning when you pee
- Needing to pee more often, getting up at night to go, or having a sudden urge to pee
- Blood in your pee
- A weak urine flow or trouble emptying your bladder
- Pain in your flank, back or lower abdomen
- Difficulty controlling your bladder or urine leakage
- Trouble in sexual life, such as difficulty getting or keeping an erection, delayed or early ejaculation, or reduced interest in sex
- A lump, swelling or pain in a testicle
Sudden, severe pain in a testicle is an emergency: seek emergency care straight away.
Some reasons to see a urologist don't involve symptoms. Men are more likely to have prostate problems with age, so a check can be worthwhile, and any blood in your urine should be looked into, even if it happens only once and there's nothing else wrong. Repeated urinary infections are another reason to get checked.
What to expect
At your first visit, the urologist asks about your symptoms and medical history and examines you. Simple tests often start the same day: a urine sample to check for infection or blood, and an ultrasound scan to look at the kidneys, bladder or prostate. Men may be offered a PSA blood test, and a urine flow test if needed. In some cases, a diagnostic cystoscopy may be necessary, allowing the doctor to look inside the bladder with a thin camera.
Next, your urologist will explain the initial findings and possible diagnosis. At this stage, you may be asked to have further diagnostic tests such as a CT scan or MRI, or receive an explanation of your diagnosis and management options based on your condition and preferences.
The final step will include a discussion of treatment options. Many problems settle with lifestyle changes or medicines, and some are monitored over time. Others may need a procedure, such as shockwave therapy or minimally invasive surgery for kidney stones, or treatment for an enlarged prostate. More complex conditions, including urological cancers, may require robot-assisted surgery. Your urology team will recommend a personalised treatment plan based on your condition, preferences and overall health, and may continue to support you through treatment and recovery.
