Family Medicine

When something feels wrong, your family doctor is often the first person you see, and the one who keeps an eye on your health for years afterwards. Our family medicine doctors care for children and adults across our UAE hospitals and clinics, treating everyday problems and helping you stay well over time.
What is family medicine?
Family medicine is first-contact care for the whole person, at every age and stage. The same doctor can treat a child's infection, review an adult's blood pressure and help an older relative manage several long-term conditions. A large part of the work is prevention, using health checks and screening to catch problems early, often before you notice anything. Family medicine overlaps closely with general practice, and both refer you to specialists when a problem needs narrower expertise.
When should you see a family doctor?
Book an appointment if you notice:
- An everyday illness like a cough, sore throat or fever that isn't settling
- A long-term condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure or asthma to keep under review
- Time for a health check or screening to catch problems early
- Vaccinations for your family or before you travel
- Low mood, anxiety or stress you would like help with
- A new symptom you're worried about but not sure where to take
You don't need to be unwell to book. Many people see a family doctor for a routine health check, to manage their weight or to keep on top of blood pressure. This matters even more if diabetes or heart disease runs in your family, as both are common in the UAE. Family medicine is usually the first door you go through: your doctor treats what they can and arranges a referral when a specialist is the right next step.
What to expect
Your first visit is mostly a conversation. The doctor asks about your symptoms, your medical history and how you're feeling day to day, then examines you as needed. Simple checks often happen there and then, such as blood pressure, a finger-prick or blood test, or a urine sample. If you're in for a health check, the doctor may also record your weight and ask about your lifestyle and family history.
From there, the doctor explains what's going on and agrees the next step with you. That might be lifestyle advice, a prescription, a vaccination or a plan to monitor a long-term condition. Some visits lead to screening or a referral to a specialist. Because your records stay in one place, your family doctor can follow your health over the years, not just one visit at a time.
Family Medicine at Mediclinic
We offer family medicine in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Our family doctors look after both children and adults. They treat everyday illness and manage long-term conditions such as diabetes and asthma. Because the same doctor gets to know you, your care stays joined up rather than starting fresh each visit. Prevention is a large part of what we do, including wellness checks and routine vaccinations. When a problem needs more, they refer you to the right specialist in our network.
