HPV vaccination
Vaccination to protect against high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types linked to cervical cancer.

Protection works best before exposure
HPV vaccination protects against the types of human papillomavirus most likely to cause cervical cancer. It is most effective when given before exposure to the virus.
Vaccination may still offer protection if you have already been exposed to HPV, because you may not have been exposed to every high-risk type covered by the vaccine.
Current dose guidance
- Girls under 15: two doses, at least six months apart
- Girls and young women aged 15 to 26: three doses over six months
- People aged 27 to 45: speak to your doctor about whether vaccination is appropriate
The Department of Health recommends HPV vaccination for girls and women aged 15 to 26.
