Stress and the heart:

Most of us are aware of the cardiac risk factors for cardiovascular disease (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, diabetes mellitus, family history, physical inactivity, obesity, eating an unhealthy diet, age, ethnicity) which are risk factors for heart attack, vascular disease, stroke and death.

Unfortunately, many are not aware of the potential serious consequences of stress on the heart.

Chronic stress such as work troubles (job strain and long working hours etc.), financial difficulties, or family discord have been shown to be associated with an increase in a person’s risk of cardiovascular disease and events.

How can stress lead to heart disease?

The link between stress (especially chronic stress) and cardiovascular disease is not well understood. However, it is known that stress can influence or contribute to many of the well-established risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, smoking, lack of exercise, eating an unhealthy diet or overeating and drinking large amounts of alcohol in some people.

Chronic stress can also lead to high levels of adrenaline and stress-related hormones (such as cortisol) which in turn can increase blood pressure, triglycerides, and blood sugar. These are common risk factors for heart disease.

Stress can also decrease some patients’ compliance to prescribed medications such as cardiac medications. This can lead to untoward cardiac events.

Stress also has been thought to promote the burden of plaque deposits in the arteries. These deposits are responsible for cardiac events in the majority of victims of heart attack.

Stress is a manageable or modifiable risk factor.

The good news is that managing stress is good for your health and well-being.

Negative psychological health / mental health is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke and vice versa (positive psychological health is associated with a lower risk of heart disease and death).

What can we do about stress?

Fortunately stress, unlike some unmodifiable cardiac risk factors such as age, gender and ethnicity, can be managed in ways such as:

1. Regular exercise:

It can relieve stress, tension, anxiety and depression.

Regular exercise helps to lower blood pressure and combat other cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Walking, meditation or yoga can be very helpful to combat stress.

2. Making time for friends and family. It’s important to maintain social connections and talk with people you trust.

3. Getting enough sleep.

Sleep and stress are interconnected. Stress can affect sleep, and lack of sleep can, in turn, lead to more stress.

Adults should aim for seven to eight hours a night.

3. Maintaining a positive attitude.

4. Practising relaxation techniques while listening to music.

5. Finding a stimulating hobby that can be fun and distract you from negative thoughts or worries.

6. A health care professional can help you find ways to manage your stress.

7. Stress management or relaxation classes can also help.  Such classes are available in rehab programs, in hospitals or by calling a professional therapist in your community.

For unending stress or symptoms of depression, talk with a health care provider about getting help.

Hypertension

Hypertension is a chronic disease, which means that you, as a patient, will need to take medication for hypertension as a life-long treatment. You should not stop the medicine after few weeks or few months.

Increase in body weight/obesity can increase blood pressure, therefore the reduction of body weight will have a positive effect on the reduction of blood pressure and blood pressure control.

Reduce salt in your food as much as you can, as studies have showed that high consumption of salt can increase blood pressure and make the control of blood pressure difficult even with medications. It will be a good first step to avoid totally salty food (like chips, pickles and salty nuts).

Regular training (such as 30 minutes or more brisk walking, five days per week) can help better control blood pressure and reduce body weight. A sedentary life style has a bad effect on many heart diseases including hypertension and high cholesterol.

A regular intake of medications and regular follow up with your treating doctor is highly important, as this will enable evaluation of your medications and adjustment if needed.
