- Dr. Assel is a Canadian anaesthesiologist with over 20 years of clinical and academic experience across Iraq, the UAE and Canada. She currently practises at Brantford General Hospital in Ontario and serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Anesthesia at McMaster University, where she has been involved in teaching medical students and postgraduate residents since 2021.
Her clinical interests include obstetric anaesthesia, ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks, regional anaesthesia and postoperative analgesia, including pain management for orthopaedic procedures. Earlier in her career, she spent more than six years at Corniche Hospital in Abu Dhabi and also practised in Sharjah and Iraq. In Canada, she has worked at Thompson General Hospital and St. Boniface Hospital in Manitoba.
Dr. Assel has held clinical leadership and committee roles, including Lead of Anaesthesia and Co-Chair of a northern blood transfusion committee in Thompson. She currently serves as President of the Medical Staff Association at Brantford General Hospital and contributes to perioperative quality, blood transfusion and other hospital committees. She has also led and participated in several quality improvement projects.
Her qualifications include FRCPC in Anesthesiology, a Diploma in Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Nerve Block and Pain Management from the University of Montpellier, FICMS in Anesthesia and Intensive Care, and an MBChB. She has received multiple hospital recognitions, including BCHS Care Awards in 2024 and 2025.
