María J. Chaves-Samaniego, MD. PhD. is an ophthalmologist specialized in glaucoma and cataract surgery. Her areas of expertise are complex glaucoma surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery and cataract surgery with premium lenses implantation. She is trained in some prestigious institutions in Spain and the United States such as Bascom Palmer, Florida.

During her surgical career, she has performed numerous intraocular surgeries: deep sclerectomy, trabeculectomy and MIGS (iStent, elios, Preserflo and Xen) and glaucoma drainage devices (Baerveldt, Ahmed, Paul implant and eyeWatch). She was the first doctor to perform eyeWatch glaucoma surgery in Spain.
Before joining Mediclinic, she chaired the Glaucoma Unit in Vissum Miranza, Alicante. She has practiced as glaucoma and cataract specialist in Vissum Madrid, Miranza Palomares in Benidorm and Vissum Miranza in Alicante.

The University Of Granada, Spain, granted her with the Medical Degree in 2011 and with a Master (MS) in Tissular Engineering in 2013. After her years of training as an Ophthalmologist in San Cecilio University Hospital in Granada, Spain, and Glaucoma Fellowship in Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Florida, United States, in 2018, the University of Granada issued her with a PhD in Preventive Medicine and Public Health (Ophthalmology), in 2021.

Throughout her career, she has authored and co-authored several peer-review papers, book chapters and presentations in national and international meetings.
Regarding her ophthalmic clinical scientist career, she is currently involved in glaucoma clinical trials, and has led as principal investigator in several clinical trials and studies on glaucoma, cataract surgery and retina. Besides, she undertook training and teaching duties for ophthalmology residents at San Cecilio University Hospital in Granada, and Miguel Hernandez University in Alicante, and mentoring of glaucoma fellowships in Vissum Miranza in Alicante.
