New service - High Dose Rate Brachytherapy
Mediclinic City Hospital’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre is pleased to announce the launch of a new service - High Dose Rate Brachytherapy.
High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy treatment will enable doctors to treat gynaecological cancers more effectively, as well as other suitable tumours. The Comprehensive Cancer Centre uses Varian’s latest GammaMed-IX® HDR afterloader and BrachyVision™ planning software. The technology is beneficial to patients undergoing treatment as it may help avoid an overnight hospital stay.
HDR brachytherapy involves using needles or catheters to place a radiation source directly within a tumour. These catheters are positioned within the targeted tumour using images, treatment planning software, and a computer-controlled device called an afterloader.
Two senior Radiation Oncology Consultants, Dr Falah Al Khatib and Dr Salim Chaib Rassou along with well trained and experienced medical physicists, radiation therapists and radiation therapy nurses perform the HDR procedures.
