Mediclinic Welcare Hospital has an ultramodern Radiology and Imaging Department equipped with state-of-the-art imaging modalities and is managed by a team of dedicated radiologists and technologists headed by a highly qualified and experienced senior consultant radiologist.

Specialised imaging facilities:

3 Tesla MRI

Mediclinic Welcare Hospital continues to improve its services, and has upgraded its Radiology department to include a state-of-the-art 3 Tesla MRI from Siemens.

The 3T is ideal for brain, vascular, musculoskeletal and small bone imaging. With a magnetic field strength that is twice as powerful as the old version, the 3T MRI provides extremely clear and vivid images. This is a significant upgrade and financial investment in the heart of Mediclinic Welcare Hospital’s infrastructure.

The MRI has many features that are designed to provide comfort and convenience to patients. It has a short length, ‘open’ appearing magnet which could be beneficial for people who might experience anxiety or claustrophobia during MRIs. The advanced technology also allows for faster scans, which can be helpful for children who don't like to lay still for too long. Variable ventilation and lighting inside the magnet bore or volume adjustments are also possible for increased patient comfort.

The MRI is capable of producing excellent image quality and speed allowing excellent head-to-toe imaging for neurology, angiography, cardiac, oncology, breast, orthopaedic, and paediatric applications.

RIS / PACS

The department is virtually paperless and filmless with the use of RIS and PACS (Radiology Information System and Picture Archiving Communication System). As soon as the investigation is over, the images reach the radiologist's and physician's computers for viewing and interpretation, thus avoiding any loss of time in the management of the patients. All the interpretation reports and images are available at all times on the radiologist's and physician's computers. There is no chance of losing a film or report nor there is any chance of mixing up reports. Subsequent investigations can be compared with the previous studies easily – only a click of a button away.

CT SCAN

With the upgrade to the latest 256 multi-slice CT, the multi-formatted and 3D images have increased the diagnostic capability. With the new device, the study can be finished in a few seconds, saving patients’ time. One of the distinct advantages of this machine is its capability of cardiac imaging to evaluate the coronary arteries of the heart non-invasively with a facility to estimate calcium scoring. More and more patients and physicians prefer this non-invasive method of investigating coronary arteries.

CT-guided biopsies and drainage procedures are done routinely. This machine is supported by a modern pressure injector for contrast medium injection. The 3D images are of great help in the evaluation of fractures, tumours and aneurysms.

CT angiogram is of value in pulmonary embolism, abdominal arteries and extremities, neck and brain vessels. CT-guided drainage procedures prevent surgeries.

CT-assisted virtual colonoscopy is an important tool that can be applied to very sick patients who are not fit for colonoscopy.

Recently software was developed and incorporated into the multislice CT which is used by dental implantology.

Apart from the specialised imaging facilities the department includes:

  • Gastrointestinal and urological fluoroscopic procedures
  • Digital radiography with digital subtraction angiography
  • Digital mammography/ tomography and breast biopsy
  • Ultrasound with colour Doppler and ultrasound guided procedures
  • Orthopantomograph/ Cone Beam CT
  • Cephalometric radiograph
  • C-arm
  • Mobile x-ray machine
  • Mobile ultrasound machine

With the availability of sophisticated equipment and technical expertise, various therapeutic procedures which are safe and simple alternatives to surgical procedures in high-risk patients, can be performed in the department.
