Urological procedures involves surgery on organs including the kidney, urinary bladder, urethra, ureter and the male reproductive organs such as the prostate.

A) Prostatectomies

Robotic prostatectomy is today the most common approach to treating prostate cancer around the world. Robotic prostatectomies help surgeosn to perform the removal of complete or part of the prostate while preserving the surrounding nerves and ensuring a faster recovery.

B) Radical cystectomies

Cystectomies are the surgical removal of the urinary bladder, usually performed to remove cancer from the bladder. Radical cystectomy in men means removal of the entire bladder which also includes removal of the prostate and seminal vesicles as these run the risk of spreading the cancer to adjacent organs. Similarly, in females, the same surgery requires the removal of bladder, uterus, ovaries and part of the vagina. After the surgery, a urinary diversion (another passage for diverting the flow of urine) is created, also with the help of robotic surgical system. Based on the overall health of the patient, a neo-bladder is established using a loop of the small intestine as a reservoir.

C) Retroperitoneal and lateral pelvic lymph node dissection

As a part of rectal cancer surgery, surgeons also excise certain lymph nodes that may be at risk of having cancer as it gives better results during radiation.

D) Nephrectomy

Nephrectomy is the surgical removal of part or of the whole  kidney(s) in case of kidney cancer. In the case of a partial nephrectomy, surgeons using da Vinci technology may be able to perform the surgery through a few small incisions (cuts) with a precision which may help preserve the kidney by removing just the tumour.

  • Partial Nephrectomy (partial removal of kidney)
  • Total Nephrectomy (total removal of kidney)

E) Live donor nephrectomies

In living donor kidney transplants, the exposure of a healthy donor to the risk of major surgical intervention is high and unnecessary. Through robotic assisted surgery such as da Vinci, living donor surgery becomes simpler as it reduces complications, hospital stay and pain, whilst promoting afaster recovery.

F) Kidney transplant

Mediclinic City Hospital is one of the few hospitals in the UAE to perform kidney transplant surgeries. Now with the use of the dDa Vinci robotic system, our experienced transplant surgeons can perform the surgeries with an even lower complication rate and excellent graft function, giving patients the chance to recover faster, with better kidney functions and lower risk of infection while being immunocompromised.
