What Is Menopause?
Menopause is the point in a woman’s life when her monthly periods stop due to a drop in hormones. Menopause generally happens around the age of 50, but it can occur as early as age 45, and as late as age 55. It can be brought on prematurely by surgery or by treatments for other conditions such as cancer.
The Three Stages of Menopause
Menopause happens in three stages – perimenopause, which starts in a woman’s early 40s; menopause, which happens when a woman has not had a monthly period for 12 months; and postmenopause, which lasts for the rest of a woman’s life.
Late Reproductive Age
You may start noticing subtle changes in your menstrual cycle, such as:
- Shorter cycles
- Worsening PMS
- Changes in flow and duration
You may also experience brain fog and memory symptoms.
Perimenopause
Oestrogen levels start varying more dramatically, causing additional menopause symptoms.
- Cycles can vary by 7 or more days initially
- In later stages of perimenopause, you may go 2 months or more between periods.
- Hot flashes and night sweats are common symptoms.
Menopause and post-menopause
Menopause officially starts once you have gone 12 months without a period.
- Hot flashes fade away after 5-8 years
- Symptoms relating to low oestrogen can develop, such as vaginal dryness.
Menopause can often be a difficult time for women – it can pose health risks to some and produce symptoms that affect daily life, such as:
- Low mood and anxiety
- Sleeping problems
- Hot flashes
- Brain fog and concentration problems
- Low sexual desire
- Vaginal dryness and painful intercourse
This is not the full list of symptoms and the timelines may vary from one woman to another. If you are concerned about a symptom you have, follow this link to read more.
