Sophia is a registered nurse by profession and has been working as a credentialed diabetes educator (CDE) with more than 10 years of experience in the field of diabetes education. She has received her basic training from India and obtained her B.Sc. Honors Degree in Nursing from Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing, New Delhi. She obtained the Certificate of Diabetes Education after successfully completing the International Diabetes Federation-Multidisciplinary Diabetes Care Education Program in 2007 in Al-Ain, UAE. She also attended the one year course on Diabetes Education offered by the Juvenile Diabetes Education Centre, Dubai, in 2009.
Her experience and passion to educate patients with diabetes on the necessary lifestyle changes and enhancing self-care behaviours, including healthy eating, being active, monitoring, taking medication, reducing risks, healthy coping and problem solving has equipped many patients to manage their health better . She also addresses the challenges faced in making lifestyle changes and offers workable options to help them achieve glycaemic control. She collects patient data to monitor their health status and proactively manages the patient's condition by effectively referring clients and providing prompt advice.
She has worked with patients with or at risk of type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes and gestational diabetes. She is very passionate about involving the patient and family in their care and is very systematic in helping them use their knowledge and skill to reach their self-defined health goals.
She is also an integral part of the multidisciplinary team at the hospital and works alongside the physician/dietician to help their clients achieve their glycaemic control.
She has initiated many educational sessions and programs on diabetes for empowering the staff and keeping them abreast of updates in diabetes management and care. The sessions enable staff to gain confidence in providing care for people with diabetes who are at high risk for disease progression and complication development.
