Cardiothoracic Surgery

Mediclinic Airport Road’s heart centre, with state-of-the-art equipment and an expert team of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, specialist anaesthetists and nurses, offers the minimally invasive cardiac surgery in line with the  highest international standards.

Minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) is one of the most popular innovations in the world of surgery, because it allows surgeons to perform interventions on the heart and its nearby structures while minimising the trauma and stress for the patient. Different techniques are used depending on the disease: video-assisted surgery, robotic-assisted surgery, endovascular procedures, transcatheter procedures – all of which entail less blood use, less scarring and a quicker recovery time, with the same quality and safety than the conventional approach.

Minimally invasive cardiac surgery is mainly performed in the following disease according to the patient’s condition:

  • Coronary artery bypass: MIDCAB, Hybrid technique
  • Heart valve repair / replacement: Mitral, Aortic, Tricuspid
  • Cardiac tumours: Atrial Myxoma, Fibroelastoma
  • Repair of congenital defects: ASD, VSD, Abnormal pulmonary return
  • Pericardial disease: surgical window, biopsy
  • Epicardial leads in resynchronization for heart failure
  • Transcatheter valve replacement (TAVI, TAVR)

Cardiac surgery with conventional approach is also available and the team has extensive expertise in following procedures:

  • Total arterial coronary bypass grafting: off-pump, on-pump
  • Heart valve repair: Mitral, Aortic, Tricuspid
  • Aortic root surgery with valve sparing procedure (David / Yacoub technique)
  • Cardiac surgery in Marfan syndrome
  • Myomectomy in Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

THORACIC SURGERY

Thoracic Surgery is a key service at Mediclinic Airport Road Hospital, accepting patients from within our own hospital and other Mediclinic facilities in Abu Dhabi, as well as other private and government hospital when they need a thoracic surgery intervention which they cannot provide.

Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) is the new standard and is performed according to the patient’s condition. The following procedures are carried out:

  • Chest tube insertion
  • Pleural / Lung biopsy: VATS / open technique
  • VATS / Posterolateral thoracotomy (classical) for:
    • pneumonectomy
    • lobectomy
    • segmentectomy
    • wedge resection
    • decortication
  • Mediastinal tumor: Thymoma, Goiters
  • Surgery for chest trauma
  • Diaphragmatic hernias
  • Rib resection /  Thoracocenthesis
  • Fibro-optic bronchoscopy under local anaesthesia
  • Thoracoscopy / mediastinoscopy under general anaesthesia

Trans-bronchial biopsy /  rigid bronchoscopy
