What is laser ablation?

EVLA is the method for the treatment of large saphenous veins. The main superficial veins, such as the great saphenous vein, which runs on the inside of your leg from the groin in a straight line down to your ankle, or the small saphenous vein, which runs behind your calf muscle, are treated with a variety of techniques called percutaneous ablation. A laser catheter is inserted through a vein puncture in the leg. It is advanced to below the groin where the vein joins the deep veins of the thigh. Anaesthetic fluid is injected to surround the vein through its length and isolate the vein from surrounding skin and tissue. Once the laser is turned on, the vein tube reacts and starts to close as the catheter is removed. The vein blood that used to sit in this ineffective vein now gets naturally redirected into the deep veins of the lower extremities or legs that are much more effective, and your circulation improves immediately.

What is venaseal ablation?

Venaseal ablation is the latest method for the treatment of large saphenous veins. A catheter is inserted through a vein puncture in the leg. It is advanced to below the groin where the vein joins the deep veins of the thigh. Special medical glue is injected with pressure applied to your leg from outside until the faulty vein is glued and the blood flows to the healthy venous channels.

What can I expect from ablation?

Endovenous therapy has revolutionised varicose vein treatment in the last 10 years. With ablation, you should expect a quick recovery within a day to near normal level of activity. The procedure takes less than an hour to perform and has good long-term results.

What is the treatment for my spider veins?

Spider veins are mainly a cosmetic problem with no serious health consequences. The treatment is micro-sclerotherapy. This is performed by direct injection of a sclerosant substance into the undesired veins to induce fibrosed and collapse. Sometimes complete resolution is achieved. We offer microsclerotherapy as part of laser, usually one to two months after the main procedure and will usually require more than one session. It is done in the surgical rooms.

What is the difference between ablation and open surgery?

Ablation is believed to be less painful, with less rate of postoperative complications. There is minimal operative scarring and virtually no recovery period. It has been suggested that the recurrence of varicose veins after percutaneous ablation is less than after open surgery.

What is vein stripping and is it still performed?

Vein stripping is an operation where the main superficial veins are disconnected from the deep veins at their junctions and stripped through a tunnel to a lower level. This used to be the first line of treatment of varicose veins and is still performed for specific indications.

What are the risks or side effects of endovenous treatment of varicose veins?

There is no surgical procedure without the risk of complications. Endovenous treatment is not an exception. Despite being uncommon, some of its side effects could be serious and longstanding. We encourage you to read through the attached list of procedure risks in the attached consent form and contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Many doctors treat varicose veins – why consult with a vascular surgeon?

The veins are part of the dynamic circulation and with complex physiology. A vascular surgeon’s care provides an expert view and perspective on causes, treatments and differential diagnoses of the leg circulation. Just because you have varicose veins, it doesn’t mean it’s causing your underlying problem. We believe that vascular surgeons are best trained and equipped to identify and treat circulation problems effectively and safely.

Does insurance cover varicose vein treatment?

Currently, health funds will only cover the treatment for symptomatic varicose veins after failing conservative management. Endovenous ablation is considered the current gold standard treatment and will be covered for appropriate patients.
