During the sweltering summer months, it is essential to stay hydrated. Dehydration occurs when we use or lose more fluids than we have taken in.

Symptoms:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Decreased urination
  • Dark coloured urine
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion

Common causes:

  • Lack of fluid intake
  • Vigorous exercise in the heat
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Fever
  • Increased urination
  • Excessive sweating

Prevention:

  • If ill with vomiting and/or diarrhea, ensure to intake a large amount of fluids
  •  Ensure to drink a large amount of water before, during and after exercise to replenish the fluids lost through sweating
  • Drink additional water in hot or humid weather to lower your body temperature and replace what is lost through sweating

Make sure to see a doctor immediately if you are feeling irritated, disorientated and more fatigued than normal, especially if this is accompanied with diarrhea and vomiting.
