Comprehensive cancer care, tailored to you.

At Mediclinic, we understand that a cancer diagnosis is difficult, not just for you but for your loved ones as well. Our Oncology Department is dedicated to delivering the highest standards of cancer diagnosis, treatment and support. With a team of internationally trained specialists and a wide range of cutting-edge technology, we offer personalised care that focuses on your health and emotional well-being, every step of the way.

Diagnostics

Our oncologists are experts in diagnosing and treating all kinds of cancer. We offer patients a wide variety of tests, including:

  • PET/CT scans: using a radioactive tracer to highlight bundles of overactive cells that could cause tumours and generate complex 3D images of the inside of your body. This allows your doctor to see changes in the metabolic activity of cells and provide treatments based on their findings.
  • Biopsies: surgical removal of a small sample of body tissue, which is then sent to a lab to determine whether the growth is benign or malignant. There are many different types of biopsies depending on the type of cancer you might have, and your oncologist will advise you on which type is best for you.
  • Mammography: a specific type of breast imaging, using low-dose X-rays to detect cancer early. Mammograms can show changes in breast tissue long before even doctors notice anything wrong, and this gives women a much better change of catching cancer early enough to operate.
  • Clinical Genetics: analysing your genetic data to assess your risk of developing cancer later in life. This is especially aimed at those with a family history of cancer, effectively using a patient’s past to predict their future.

Treatment Options

If our oncology team provide you with a diagnosis of cancer, then you can benefit from our wide range of treatment options. Your doctor will advise on the best treatment options for you, which might include any of the following:

  • Chemotherapy: using specific medication to destroy cancer cells in the body. This can be administered either together with radiation therapy or as a standalone treatment. It can also be administered before surgery to reduce the size of the tumour, or as a form of palliative care if the chance of curing the cancer declines.
  • Radiotherapy: treating tumours with highly precise beams of ionising radiation. The energy and dosage are calculated by both doctors and physicists to ensure that non-cancerous tissue is avoided. Procedures such as intensity-modulated and image-guided radiotherapy improve safety and chances of success even further.
  • Surgical oncology: our surgical teams are highly experienced in both traditional and minimally invasive surgeries, and bring a wealth of knowledge and compassion to the operating table.
  • Palliative care: cancer and its treatments can bring all kinds of side effects – not just physical symptoms, but also psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression. Pain management, psychological support and long-term care ensures you are never without a helping hand.

What Is Cancer?

The body’s cells grow by dividing into two, in a process called mitosis. Normally the genes in the cells control mitosis, but sometimes cells divide uncontrollably, causing abnormal growths known as tumours.

There are two types of tumours – benign and malignant. Benign tumours generally grow slowly and don’t spread to other body parts, while malignant tumours grow faster and can spread (metastasise) to other parts of the body.

Malignant vs Benign Tumors

There are more than 100 types of cancer that can affect humans, each with their own set of symptoms. Oncologists specialise in diagnosing and treating different types of cancer.
